Calm Abiding Meditation Courses 2011

 Calm Abiding Meditation Courses 2011

Calm Abiding Meditation: 8 Week Introductory Course

Next course Mondays 10 October - 5 December (no session 31 October - Melbourne cup day weekend).

In this course an experienced lay Buddhist practitioner will give a basic introduction course to meditation in a structured format, which is based on information compiled from teachings in traditional Buddhist texts. The course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn techniques to develop greater peace of mind by using meditation. A commitment to Buddhism is not necessary or expected.

Calm Abiding Meditation increases mindfulness - being present moment by moment with a non-judgmental awareness and acceptance. Evidence indicates that mindfulness supports our minds to be relaxed, focused and peaceful, improving health, enabling recovery from stress and anxiety. Calm Abiding meditation brings a clearer perspective on life and awakens happiness.

This form of meditation is a training for the mind, strengthening the meditators awareness and skill in observing thoughts; increasing awareness of the intrinsic stillness within, and choices about how and what we communicate. A radical, challenging and stimulating means of learning new ways to relate to self, others, and the world. Based on the ancient Tibetan Buddhist technique of Calm Abiding (Shamatha) meditation. This is a secular course - no commitment to Buddhism is necessary

The course provides clear instruction in a structured seminar format. There will be ample opportunity for clarifying any questions about the practice and for learning a new and practical skill for use in everyday life. Providing regular practice opportunities, it is aimed at aiding students in the developing a personal regular mindfulness meditation practice.

Taught by John Julian, a very experienced mindfulness trainer who has conducted these courses over a number of years. He is also a practitioner and a recognised Victorian mental health "practitioner trainer".

Please note that the course involves a sequential set of teachings. To maximise learning participants are encouraged to attend all 8 sessions
